Tanzania in June – weather, prices, safari and more

June is one of the best months to visit Tanzania as it marks the start of the dry season. The dry weather and mild temperatures make it ideal for a safari, beach retreat or trek up Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru. Moreover, a migration safari in western Serengeti National Park will allow visitors to witness the river crossing at the Grumeti River. These ideal conditions, make Tanzania in June an excellent destination for a safari and beach holiday.

The dry season, which runs from June to October, is widely regarded as the best time for a safari in Tanzania. The landscapes become increasingly arid as the months progress, causing wildlife to never veer far from permanent water sources. Moreover, the sparse vegetation also makes spotting wildlife much easier. That said, in June, the parks are still lush and green thanks to the long rains that occur between March and May. Additionally, June has dust-free skies, making it an excellent month for a photography safari.

The dry season is the high season, and peak prices apply. However, the first three weeks of June fall within the shoulder season, which means you can enjoy the high-season experience at slightly lower prices, with fewer visitors. Nevertheless, booking early is essential as some accommodations book up quickly.

Weather in Tanzania in June

Unlike the winter and summer seasons in the northern hemisphere, Tanzania’s tropical climate features two rainy and dry seasons. Being 2.6 times larger than Germany with varying altitudes, regional differences in weather occur.

The long dry season begins in June and lasts for five months. However, June is the coolest month, and temperatures can feel cold during early morning game drives. Therefore, wearing a warm layer that can be removed as the morning warms up is advisable. As the dry season progresses, temperatures increase monthly, landscapes slowly dry out, and nature’s colours transition from green to gold and then ochre.

Temperature and rainfall will vary at high-altitude destinations. Consequently, after sunset, temperatures decrease markedly, and frosts are common. At the coast, temperatures and humidity are at their lowest, offering perfect weather for a beach retreat. The dry weather also provides excellent conditions for trekking Mount Kilimanjaro or Mount Meru.

Temperatures in Tanzania in June are mild, with regional and altitudinal variations. June is the coolest month of the year, but due to the tropical climate, temperatures still feel pleasant rather than cold. As a result, depending on where you decide to visit, afternoon temperatures can range from 21°C (69°F) to 28°C (82°F) in June. For advice on what to pack for a safari in June, you can read our tips below.

Is Tanzania in June a good time for a safari?

June is an excellent month for a safari in Tanzania. The weather is superb, wildlife viewing is fantastic, and the landscapes are green. Despite being the high season, visitor numbers are lower than from July onwards.

Tanzania has three safari circuits: Northern, Southern, and Western. The Northern Circuit is highly popular during peak season and includes Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, and Serengeti National Park. The Southern Circuit offers a more secluded experience and is known for UNESCO-grade parks, such as Ruaha National Park and Nyerere National Park. The Western Circuit is even more remote and allows visitors to explore parks where time seems to have stood still, such as Katavi National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park.

During June, you can expect to witness green landscapes throughout Tanzania. For instance, while visiting the rhino sanctuary at Mkomazi National Park, you can enjoy stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The enormous baobab trees at Tarangire National Park and Ruaha National Park will be in full leaf and are gorgeous at this time of year. Additionally, the lush grasslands of the Serengeti National Park and the abundance of wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater are simply spectacular.

Locational highlights to see and do in Tanzania in June:

  • The vast herds of wildebeest will have reached the western corridor of the Serengeti National Park by June. Meanwhile, the mating period that starts in May, also known as the rut, will be coming to an end. This provides a small opportunity to witness this crucial stage in the wildebeest’s annual cycle.
At the western corridor, the wildebeest and their young calves face their first dangerous obstacle – crossing the Grumeti River. Although the Grumeti River is not as wide as the Mara River, watching hundreds of wildebeest cross this river, home to giant Nile crocodiles, is an unforgettable sight.
  • The Ruaha National Park’s wetlands are breathtaking in early June and an exceptional destination for bird lovers. Home to 10% of the world’s lion population, it is one of the best places to spot lions, large herds of elephants and even rare Wild Dogs.
  • The dust-free skies make for fantastic landscape photography at Lake Natron, Ngorongoro Crater, and Tarangire National Park.

Is June a good time for a Zanzibar beach holiday?

June is not only an ideal month for a safari in Tanzania, but it is also one of the best times to visit Zanzibar. The average minimum temperature is 22°C (71°F), while the average maximum temperature is 30°C (86°F). At the same time, humidity and visitor numbers are low.

Tanzania and the Zanzibar archipelago provide an exceptional experience in June. You can begin with an authentic safari, followed by a tropical holiday on pristine beaches. This allows you to rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul before returning home.

Zanzibar is a beautiful destination to explore, especially in June. The archipelago has been a crossroads between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia for centuries. It consists of two main islands, Unguja (also known as Zanzibar) and Pemba, and approximately fifty smaller islands. You’ll find palm-fringed white sandy beaches that stretch into the warm turquoise waters, making it a perfect place for a honeymoon. In addition, there are superb water sports, delicious seafood, and lovely beachside accommodation to enjoy.

Is June a good time to climb Kilimanjaro?

June is an excellent month to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. At 5,895 meters tall, it is Africa’s highest mountain and the world’s tallest free-standing mountain. If you plan to climb it, June is a great month, thanks to the dry weather conditions. However, temperatures are cooler, and there is a chance of rain at the beginning of the month.

Kilimanjaro is an attractive trek because you don’t need mountain experience to reach the summit. However, good physical fitness and a solid determination to reach the top is essential. Trekking with our mountain teams allows you to choose from four routes, each taking six to eight days on a private or group trek.

The wilder Mount Meru trek is a similar challenge but with fewer other people. It only takes four days to complete, and you’ll be surrounded by wildlife on day one. Or, if you’re short on time, you can join a one-day walk to Shira Plateau, the oldest and least tall of Kilimanjaro’s three peaks.

What is the cost of visiting Tanzania in June?

June is the start of the dry season, an ideal time for a safari, beach retreat, or mountain trek. The first three weeks of June are the shoulder season, with slightly lower prices. However, some accommodations may charge peak prices as the month progresses as some camps consider it high season.

Budgeting to stay for seven to ten days is the minimum time to enjoy an experience without feeling rushed. Flights and park fees remain consistent all year-round, so there is no way to save money here. However, you can influence the cost of two variables.

When planning a safari, you can choose between private and group safaris. Private safaris allow you to select dates, destinations, and companions, making them perfect for families, honeymooners, photographers, and birdwatchers. However, if you are a solo traveller or travelling as a couple, then you can save money by choosing a group safari. On a group safari, you will share the cost for vehicle and safari guide with other travellers. Our small group safaris have fixed itineraries and dates but are limited to seven people, ensuring everyone has a window seat in a 4×4 vehicle.

You can also save by choosing different types of accommodation. More luxurious accommodations include lodges and permanent tented camps. Mobile Explorer Camps offer a comfortable immersion into the wild, including hot showers and proper beds. Adventure camping in public campsites is the most affordable option. Is June a good time to visit Tanzania?

June is a fantastic month to visit Tanzania for a safari, mountain climb, or beach retreat. However, as it’s a popular time to travel, booking at least six months or a year in advance is advisable, especially if you plan to visit the Northern Circuit.
