What to expect on a Kilimanjaro climb?

Many visitors to northern Tanzania have a similar goal: to reach the summit of Africa’s highest mountain.

For those who turn their dream into a reality, they will discover why UNESCO has recognised Mount Kilimanjaro National Park as a World Heritage site.

As you climb, you will encounter five intriguingly different vegetation zones, home to several endangered species: vast plains, dense forests, heathlands, alpine deserts, and the summit with glaciers.

You will also be rewarded with stunning views of Tanzania and Kenya as you trek the largest free-standing mountain in the world.

Thankfully, trekking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro doesn’t require technical climbing skills or being a seasoned mountaineer.

All you need for this six to eight-day adventure is the determination and fitness to trek for five to seven hours daily and the reserve to trek for twelve to fourteen hours on the summit ascent.

Adding an extra acclimatisation day to your itinerary can lower the risk of altitude sickness and improve your chances of reaching the top.

Our experienced mountain guides will support and encourage you every step of the way, ensuring your safety on the mountain.

They work alongside porters, mountain cooks, and assistants, who are the true heroes of the mountain, carrying equipment, tents, and food to prepare the camps for your arrival. With hundreds of climbs under their belts, they know all the routes like the back of their hands.

We offer the opportunity to trek four out of the six routes up Mount Kilimanjaro:

  • The Marangu route on the mountain’s eastern side takes six days, and you sleep in shared huts.
  • The Rongai route on the mountain’s northern side takes six days and is only possible on private treks.
  • The Machame route on the mountain’s southern side takes six to seven days.
  • The Lemosho route on the mountain’s western side takes seven to eight days.

Join our team for a safe climb up Mount Kilimanjaro.

How can I combine a Tanzania safari and a Kilimanjaro climb?

If you’re interested in a Kilimanjaro climb and a Tanzanian safari package, we can help you.

We are a Tanzania-based company with mountain teams, equipment, safari guides, and vehicles. This enables us to easily organise treks, prepare equipment, and make safari bookings.

With years of experience, we can ensure your safety on the mountain and on safari. Plus, we’ll be with you from when you inquire until you board your flight home.

Trekking Mount Kilimanjaro is a challenge, and you will deserve a well-earned rest after your trek. That is why most guests choose to trek the mountain and then relax on safari or combine a Kilimanjaro climb with a beach retreat.

Trekking Mount Meru might be more suitable if you’re a nature lover without summit ambitions. It offers a less trafficked mountain with wildlife on the lower forest slopes, including giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, colobus monkeys, and antelope. The trek is beautiful and only requires four days, leaving you more time to enjoy a safari or beach retreat afterwards.

If you bring any equipment to climb the mountain, such as a -12 degree-rated sleeping bag, you can leave it in our office while on safari. Alternatively, you can rent various items from us to avoid travelling with heavy luggage.

We look forward to helping you have the experience of a lifetime. Once your dream itinerary is prepared, all you have to do is to make a booking.

Kilimanjaro climb and Safari – best time to visit

A Kilimanjaro climb and Safari package requires careful planning to ensure the best weather conditions for both experiences.

The best time to travel is during the dry seasons, from January to mid-March and June to October.

For the Kilimanjaro climb, these months offer stable weather conditions with little rain and clear visibility, making the ascent easier. January and February are warmer, while July to October is cooler but still dry.

For a safari in Tanzania, these dry seasons are also ideal, as animals gather around water sources and vegetation is less dense.

National parks such as the Serengeti, Tarangire National Park, and Ngorongoro Crater offer the best wildlife viewing conditions during these months.

The long rainy season from March to May should be avoided, as it can be wet, slippery, and visibility may be limited.
